1099-NEC Filing FAQ
What is a 1099-NEC form?
The 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation) is an IRS tax form used to report payments of $600 or more made to independent contractors, freelancers, and other nonemployees during the tax year. It replaced Box 7 of the 1099-MISC starting in 2020.
When do I need to file a 1099-NEC?
You must file a 1099-NEC for each person or business you paid $600 or more in nonemployee compensation during the tax year. This includes payments to independent contractors, freelancers, consultants, and other self-employed individuals.
What's the deadline for 1099-NEC filing?
The 1099-NEC must be filed with the IRS and furnished to recipients by January 31 of the year following the tax year. There is no automatic extension for this deadline.
What's the difference between 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC?
The 1099-NEC is specifically for nonemployee compensation (contractor payments). The 1099-MISC covers other payment types like rent, royalties, and prizes. Before 2020, contractor payments were reported on 1099-MISC Box 7.
Do I need to send a 1099-NEC to my contractors?
Yes. If you paid a contractor $600 or more during the tax year, you must send them a copy by January 31. You also file a copy with the IRS. Penalties for late filing range from $60 to $310 per form.
